by Ciaran Burke

Embothrium coccineum (Chilean flame tree) at The Mill, Avoca. We are here for lunch but this a feast for gardeners eyes!

  1. adore embothriums, they grow wild in my dads place near glengarriff, can you grow them in the west?

    • We can’t grow them at home as it is too cold, but they grow well nearer the coast where there is acid soil. In Connemara they thrive. At Cashel House where we give the courses there is a fine specimen. I saw a Telopea truncata in flower at Mount Usher, it is a relative from Tamania
